It is just the first number you hear, and it changes how you evaluate everything else. I have made this mistake more than once, and the repair bills trained me to stop. Prevention Is Cheaper Than Correction

I don’t think the fix is a bigger budget. The fix is adding verification steps that stop the expensive surprises before they happen. A few minutes of checking prevents a few months of correction.

Now, before I approve any used equipment purchase, I require three things. First, an independent inspection that includes oil analysis and a test of hydraulic functions. It costs a few hundred dollars, and it has saved me more than that many times. Second, real service documentation. If the seller cannot show where the machine has been serviced, I assume it was not done. Third, a total cost estimate, not just a price tag. I put purchase price, expected repairs, parts availability, downtime risk and resale value into a simple spreadsheet.
