I manage procurement for a 45-person site development company. I've handled roughly $420,000 a year in equipment, parts, and maintenance purchases for the past seven years. After tracking every invoice in our cost system, I've come to believe that price is one of the last things I should look at when I choose equipment.
That sounds backwards. I can point to the exact moment it stopped sounding backwards: a small drill press that cost us about three times its purchase price.
The Drill Press That Should Have Cost $900
Our maintenance shop asked for a bench drill press. A reputable supplier quoted $1,150. I found a similar-looking unit online for $890. Same spindle travel. Same motor power. I assumed similar specs meant similar value.
Like most beginners, I compared the visible numbers and ignored everything else.
The unit arrived and worked for about four months. Then the motor switch failed. The company that sold it did not have a U.S. parts distributor. A local motor shop could not match the switch. We paid an electrician $210 to install a temporary external switch, then waited 19 days for the replacement part. Add the lost shop time and the padded labor, and the $890 drill press cost closer to $2,100 before it worked again.
I learned never to assume that a spec sheet tells the whole cost story. It tells the performance story. It rarely tells the support story.
Parts Diagrams Before Purchase Orders
I use the same logic when we buy heavy equipment. When one of our crew leads wants to look at an older Terex TC16 compact excavator, I ask for the serial number before I ask for the price. Then I open the Terex TC16 parts catalog and look at the undercarriage, hydraulic pump, and cylinder kits.
Why? Because a compact excavator's real cost depends on whether those components have available replacements. The name Terex on the side of the machine does not guarantee that a local dealer stocks every Terex TC16 part. It only means the parts system exists. My job is to find out whether that system will actually help us when the machine breaks.
In one comparison, we were looking at two used compact excavators. The Terex TC16 had a higher asking price. The other machine was about $3,100 cheaper. When I compared the TC16 parts diagrams, the hydraulic pump and filter part numbers showed up across several Terex compact models. On the cheaper machine, the equivalent pump part number appeared on only one model. That told me the cheaper machine could become very expensive if that pump failed. The price difference disappeared in a single service event.
The same test applies before any Terex drill rig purchase. A drill rig is not a drill press. If a drill press goes down, the fabrication shop can work around it. If a Terex drill rig goes down on a geotechnical or water well job, the rest of the site stops. So I ask the dealer for the parts list for the rotary head, hydraulic pumps, and key hoses before I ask whether the machine fits the budget. If those parts are not available locally, the list price is not the real price. The real price includes the days the machine will sit idle waiting for a hose assembly.
Mixers, Scissor Lifts, and the Same Hidden Costs
Mixers hide the same cost in different places. A concrete mixer can look simple. But the drum drive, hydraulic lines, and frame pivot points are the parts that make or break the maintenance budget. When I review a mixer quote, I ask where those parts are stocked. If the seller cannot answer that question, I do not proceed.
The same mindset applies to aerial equipment. New project coordinators sometimes ask, What is a scissor lift? It's not a silly question. A scissor lift is an aerial work platform that moves straight up and down on X-shaped steel supports. It's designed for vertical access, not for reaching over obstacles. If you need to reach out and over something, you need a boom lift. That distinction matters because the wrong category can make a low rental price meaningless.
For a Genie scissor lift, the hidden cost line is usually batteries and charger. For a concrete mixer, it is drum drive and hydraulics. For a Terex drill rig, it is rotary head, hoses, and filters. The equipment is different, but the procurement question is the same: What does it take to keep this machine running?
The Objection I Expect
Some people will say that you can save money with aftermarket parts. I'm not against aftermarket filters, seals, and wear items. But you cannot price an aftermarket part until you know the exact OEM part number, the right serial number range, and the lead time. The parts diagram gives you that baseline.
It also tells you whether you are buying a machine made from common parts or an oddball. If the machine is an oddball, the lower purchase price can disappear in one repair event. If a rebuild option exists, that is worth considering. Rebuilding still has a lead time and a risk. On a mixer or a drill rig, the machine is usually down while the rebuild happens. Downtime is not theoretical. I have watched it happen more than once.
What I Can and Cannot Tell You
I am not saying Terex is always the right brand. I am not an application engineer. If you need a Terex drill rig for a specific rock condition, or you are deciding between undercarriage options, talk to the manufacturer's product support team. That part is outside my expertise.
What I can tell you is how to evaluate the purchase from the cost side. Use a total cost of ownership model. Mine is a simple one: purchase price plus expected repair cost plus expected downtime cost plus resale or disposal value. That model only works if you feed it with real parts data. That is why I look at parts pages before I look at purchase orders.
My Final Opinion
I did not start out as someone who believes cheap is expensive. I started out as someone who thought a spreadsheet could compare price. The drill press taught me otherwise.
Now my rule is simple. Before we buy anything with hydraulics, engines, or batteries, I want to see the parts page. That is true for a compact excavator, a scissor lift, a concrete mixer, and especially a Terex drill rig.
The price of iron is only the down payment. The rest is support. If the support is not there, the bargain is not a bargain. It is just deferred downtime.
