It wasn't. Six days, one brokerage fee, one restocking fee, and one lost weekend later, I installed the controller I could have ordered on day one. That episode became mistake No. 9 on a list that now has 11 entries. I've written every one of them down since 2019, and the total is roughly $23,000 in wasted budget once you count freight, downtime, and my own pride.

My rule now applies to everything from wheel motors to breaker bars: ask what's NOT included before you ask what the price is. Does the quote include shipping, brokerage, duties, restocking, and core charge? If the part fails, does the replacement ship both ways on their account? Sometimes aftermarket parts do win on price. A complete undercarriage service kit for one of our skid steers came in about 35% below the dealer quote. Conclusion for this dimension: safety-critical or drivetrain parts go OEM. Simple wear items go to a brand-name supplier that can produce a specification sheet. Parts from someone who can't explain what they're selling don't go anywhere near my machines.
Dimension 3: Warranty and support — who answers when it fails?
A failed lockout solenoid on one loader was 11 months old when it started sticking. I called the dealer with the serial number and the receipt, and they swapped it at the parts counter. No drama. The OEM controller that finally saved the May job came with a 12-month replacement warranty.
The aftermarket hub came with a 12-month warranty that took two pages of conditions and three weeks to fail. The supplier wanted the failed hub removed, disassembled, photographed, and measured before they would ship a replacement. We did all of that. The replacement arrived ten days after we'd already bought the OEM hub and put the machine back to work. That isn't a warranty. It's a loyalty test.
When a down machine costs you money every day, the claim process is part of the price. Ask who backs the warranty: the seller, the importer, or the overseas factory. Who pays freight and labor if the part fails? Is the warranty valid if someone other than their approved shop installs it? Get the answer in writing. Scenario three: the part is no longer available from the official dealer. This happens more often than people expect with older compact equipment. I find the best independent supplier, ask for country of origin and a drawing, and replace components in pairs where it makes sense.
