I'm a procurement manager. I've managed a parts budget of nearly $180,000 annually for six years for a mid-sized mining operation. I've documented every invoice, and I've made expensive mistakes. This checklist is what I wish I had on day one. It covers the 6 steps I use now for every single Terex parts order. No fluff, just the process.

This checklist is for anyone buying spare parts for Terex mining equipment, cranes, backhoes, or scrapers. It's for the person whose job is to get the right part, at the right time, without blowing the budget.

Step 1: Define Your Machine Exactly

First things first. You cannot buy the right part if you are working from memory. Write down the exact machine model and its serial number. Pull it from the manufacturer's plate on the frame, not from a faded sticker in the cab.

The conversation I've had a hundred times: "I need a starter for a Terex TR60."


That's not enough. A TR60 built in 2020 might use a different starter than a 2010 model. The serial number is the key. Use it to look up the official Terex parts diagram. This is your single source of truth. Don't rely on a parts counter's memory.

Step 2: Connect with the Right Parts Channel

Once you have the part number from the diagram, find a dealer. The official Terex dealer network is the safest bet for genuine parts with a warranty. But, if you're looking at older equipment or have a strict budget, a heavy-duty parts specialist might have a quality OEM alternative.

Here's a communication failure I lived through: I said "Terex spare parts for a TA400 artic." They heard "We don't carry Terex specific, but we have generic brake pads." Result: The generic pads were a different compound and wore out in three months, costing us $4,500 in labor to swap them. The $600 savings turned into a net loss.

Step 3: Decode the Part Number

The most frustrating part of this job: The "urgent need" premium. You'd think a 40% markup for same-day delivery is a one-off. It's not. After the third time I paid that premium, I realized I was building a buffer into my schedule, not just trusting the promise of "next day available."

Step 5: Verify Quality Credentials

The quality of the part you put on your machine directly shapes how your operators and your boss see your equipment's reliability. A cheap, failing part makes even a brand new Terex mining equipment truck look poorly maintained. Details reflect your professionalism.

Isn't it a deal-breaker if a part doesn't have a certified test report? For critical components—like a brake caliper for a Denali truck or a swing drive for an excavator—it should be. If the vendor can't provide a material certificate or a pressure test report, walk away. That $50 difference on a seal kit isn't worth the risk of a $15,000 warranty claim.

Step 6: Confirm the Content and Delivery Window

You've ordered. The parts arrive. Done? No. This is where mistakes happen.

A specific communication failure: I said the parts must arrive by the end of Q2 (June 30). The supplier heard "end of fiscal quarter" and shipped on June 30. They arrived July 3. Result: The project was delayed by a week because the maintenance schedule was set for June 28. The cost was about $7,000 in lost production.

Your checklist item: When you receive the parts, immediately check them against the parts diagram. Open the box. Don't just look at the shipping label. Count the fasteners. Check the thread pitch if it's a bolt. If it looks wrong, call them before you even try to install it.


One time, I ordered a seal kit for a Terex scraper. The parts were physically in the box, but the O-ring size was one millimeter off. It would have failed under pressure. Catching that before install saved us a return trip and a red hot boss.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
