When You Need This Checklist

If you're signing off on a Terex delivery—whether it's a 100-ton crane, a scissor lift, or a mini excavator—this list is for you. It's not about theory. It's about catching issues before they become your problem.

I've been in quality assurance for Terex equipment for over 4 years. I review roughly 200 units annually. In 2022 alone, I rejected about 12% of first deliveries due to things like mislabeled parts, cosmetic damage, or specs that didn't match the order sheet. These weren't bad machines. They were machines that failed a specific check.

Here's a 15-point checklist. Use it. You'll save yourself calls, returns, and delays.

Step 1: Verify the Delivery Paperwork

What to do: Before you even look at the machine, match the serial number on the delivery note to the one on the unit. I've seen a case where a dealer sent the wrong crane variant—same model, different year—and the paperwork matched a unit that was six months older. The serial numbers didn't align.

Check for:
- Model number and year match your purchase order.
- Serial number on the unit is the same as on the Bill of Lading.

Step 2: Do a Visual Walk-Around

This sounds basic, but there's a catch. Most people scan for dents and scratches. That's fine. But check for uneven gaps between body panels, misaligned hinges, or paint overspray on seals. Those point to prior damage or poor rework.

Take photos. From every angle. Even if everything looks clean. You'd be surprised how often a "new" unit has been 'touched up' at the dealer lot.

Step 3: Inspect the Underbelly

Why this is often missed: People check the top and sides but skip what's underneath. For equipment like a backhoe or a scraper, the undercarriage tells a story. Look for signs of fresh welding, replaced bolts, or dirt that's caked on from a previous job site.

For mini excavators and scissor lifts, check the hydraulic hoses underneath. Are they cinched tight and not rubbing against anything? That's a major failure point down the line.

Step 4: Fluid Levels and Leaks

Check all dipsticks and sight glasses—engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, fuel. But don't just check levels. Wipe the stick, recheck it, and look for any discoloration or metal shavings. That's a red flag.

While the machine is off, run your hand along the bottom of the engine block and under the hydraulic pump. A dry floor means nothing if the engine's wet. I had to reject an excavator once because a brand-new unit had a slow weep from a seal. The dealer claimed it was 'normal'. It wasn't. That seal failed within 50 hours.

Step 5: Test All Controls—Dry Run

With the engine off, operate every lever, pedal, and joystick. The movement should be smooth, with no sticking or grinding. This is how you catch mechanical binding before the system is under pressure.

One more thing: Check the foot pedals on a scissor lift. The controls are often tucked away, and if a safety lock is engaged, it won't move. You don't want to discover that when you're trying to load it.

Step 6: Start the Engine—Listen

Start it cold. The first few seconds of idle are telling. A smooth idle with no unexpected clatter or whine is good. If you hear a metallic knock, especially from the top end, that's worth noting. It could be nothing, or it could be a sign of valves that were incorrectly adjusted at the factory.

Let it idle for 2 minutes. Then rev it up to operating RPM. Listen for any change in tone. If it sounds like it's missing, there's a fuel or air problem.

Step 7: Cycle Every Function

Now, with the engine warm, move the boom, arm, bucket of an excavator. Raise and lower the scissor lift. Extend the crane's jib. Each movement should be smooth and without hesitation. Jerky movements point to air in the hydraulic system or a failing pump.

Time the cycle. If a function takes longer than spec, that's a warranty issue waiting to happen.

Step 8: Check the Safety Systems

This is a big one. For a scissor lift, test the emergency stop, the tilt sensor, and the lanyard attachment points. For a crane, check the load moment indicator (LMI) and any overload warning systems.

I rejected a 70-ton crane in Q1 2024 because the LMI was not calibrated correctly. It showed a 20% overload before the actual weight was applied. The dealer had missed it during pre-delivery inspection.

Step 9: Look at the Tires or Tracks

Check tire pressure (if applicable) and measure tread depth at multiple points. For crawlers, check the track tension. Too tight, and the sprockets and bushings will wear out fast. Too loose, and the tracks can come off.

Also look for uneven wear on the tires. If a new unit has camber wear, the alignment is off. Don't trust the dealer to fix it. Have them adjust it before you sign the paperwork.

Step 10: Verify the Safety Decals

All safety and operation decals must be intact and legible. I know this sounds trivial, but it's a regulatory compliance issue in many regions. If a decal is peeling or missing, request a replacement set be sent with the unit. You can't run a machine without legible warnings regarding pinch points or high voltage.

Step 11: Inspect the Wiring and Harnesses

Here's the one most people skip: Open the electrical panel or control box. Look for loose wires, exposed copper, or wires that are rubbing against metal edges. On a well-pump rig, for example, a chafed wire can cause a short that sinks the whole system.

Check the battery terminals. Are they clean and tight? Corrosion even on a new unit suggests the machine sat somewhere humid for months.

Step 12: Test the Lights and Horn

Turn on all lights—headlights, brake lights, indicator lights, rotating beacon. The horn should be loud and clear. This sounds obvious, but I've seen machines delivered with taillight lenses that were cracked from transport.

Step 13: Check the Cab and Comfort

Sit in the operator's seat. Adjust it. Check the seatbelt. Test the air conditioning and heater. I had a client reject a scraper because the AC didn't blow cold air—on a unit delivered in July. It was a simple refrigerant charge, but it was still a fault.

Also check the mirrors. Are they tight and in a useful position? A loose mirror on a mining truck is a safety hazard.

Step 14: Open the Service Manual

Don't just check it's there. Open it to the page you need most: the fluid capacities chart. Make sure it matches the unit. One time, a dealer supplied a manual for a different engine variant, meaning the oil viscosity spec was wrong for our climate.

Step 15: Get an Explanation for Everything You Found

If you spot any issue during the checklist—a scratch, a slow leak, a misaligned decal—document it in writing. Get the dealer rep to sign off. Don't accept verbal promises like 'we'll fix that later.' They often don't.

You're not being difficult. You're protecting your investment.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Assuming 'new' means 'perfect.' Even factory-fresh machines can have minor flaws from assembly or transport. That's why this checklist exists.

Mistake #2: Only checking what's easy to access. Crawl under the machine, open the covers. That's where the real problems hide.

Mistake #3: Trusting the pre-delivery inspection report automatically. The dealer's inspector works for the dealer. You need your own eyes.

One more thing: If you find a problem, don't accept the machine pending 'standard repairs.' Have the exact fix and timeline documented. Otherwise, the machine sits on your yard for weeks while the dealer's service schedule catches up.
